Sixth Form Nurturing
Back

Many people find it strange that pupils from independent schools seem to have such a strong affinity for their school. It's a no brainer really as the school is not its buildings but its people and its relationships and it is this strength of bond which is palpable in an independent sixth form.

For example, the sixth form students of Bromley High School show the true strengths of an independent education, where timetables are constructed around their options, not around the structure of previous years' option blocks. Relationships with teachers have the ability to develop over many years of challenging, fun and innovative lessons. University application processes are guided and supported all the way by dedicated pastoral staff who are there to mop up tears where necessary, but ultimately there to encourage students to blossom. The teaching groups within an independent sixth form are usually small and much more personal - allowing plenty of staff time to focus on challenging and inspiring their students to push themselves to their full potential.

Independent schools have exceptional experience with nurturing students throughout their school years and in particular with the sixth form years, preparing them for places at prestigious universities along with installing in them the essential skills required to enter the adult world. The guidance and support is tailored for the individual needs of each student, this individual support then leads to high attainment and successful applications.

The sixth form is a crucial time in education for making decisions and taking important exams, at the same time students have the chance to take on more senior positions within the school itself, often becoming team or society captains, prefects, editing the school magazine, or even becoming head boy or girl. Sixth formers leave brimming with self belief and great pride in their school and their education.

Louise Simpson, Head of Bromley High School proudly says "The confident, intelligent and independent young women of Bromley High School, nurtured by the supportive ethos of the school for up to 14 years, are impressive indeed. Their attitude to life is one of being able to do whatever they want, their academic credentials are impressive (typically the U6th gain 85% A and B level) and the world is their oyster".
