The two years of sixth form study are crucial to success at A level and the offer of a place at a good university. Whilst it is important to be happy wherever you study, your choice of sixth form needs to prioritise the academic rather than the social advantages.
Many students move schools following their GCSE examinations; some because their school does not have a sixth form and others because they would like a change. At this point they have a choice of places to study including schools and F.E. colleges all offering a wide range of courses. Some choose to move from state to independent schools at this point often taking advantage of the many scholarships and bursaries that are available for sixth form entry.
So what are the advantages of moving to an independent school for the sixth form?
Academically there are huge benefits to be gained from studying in a sixth form where teachers have experience of teaching classes that regularly gain high grades at A level and move on to top universities. Teaching groups are usually smaller, standards and expectations are high and stimulating discussion and competition encourage each student to attain his or her personal best.
There will also be a wide range of extra curricular activities which help to support the academic curriculum and also develop skills such as team work, leadership and independence - all good preparation for university study. For example, at Blackheath High School, many girls participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and enjoy activities such as debating (good training for future lawyers). Additional opportunities include exciting work experience both in the UK and abroad. We also have contacts with leading companies such as Lehman Brothers who offer placements on "taster days".
Sixth formers are given independence and responsibilities within a caring, supportive environment where teachers give generously of their time. Independent schools have vast experience of preparing students for places at prestigious universities and give expert guidance on how to complete university applications and be well prepared for interviews. Individual support leads to successful applications to even the more competitive courses such as Oxbridge, Medicine & Law.
Sixth formers in independent schools are provided with the support and academic environment needed to gain a place at a good university and are well prepared for the challenges of life after school. |
