Independent Education
Back

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions any parent will have to make and is crucial to defining the educational path that a child will follow. Independent education has been an attractive alternative to state education for a number of years because of the choice and diversity it offers. Parents from many different backgrounds choose to send their children to an independent school, a number of them having been state educated themselves. Independent schools provide education for children from the age of 2½-19 years and there is a wide variety available ranging from single sex, co-educational, boarding or day schools and junior or senior schools, each with its own special attributes.

It is also important to bear in mind that it is not necessary to opt for the independent route for the duration of your child's education. Indeed, many parents decide on a mix of education based on a number of factors such as the standard and availability of the local state schools. If the schools have a good reputation with excellent results, there is then the option of moving into the independent sector for secondary education or sixth form. Conversely, some consider that a good solid education provided by an Independent Preparatory School is essential in the early years and could ultimately result in their child being offered a place at a local Grammar School.

Independent Preparatory Schools by their very nature provide an all round, excellent foundation for early education, helping to maximise future opportunities. The independent school sector has a strong academic attainment record and outstanding examination results, coupled with discipline and good behaviour. Smaller class sizes ensure that each child is nurtured and encouraged to reach their own potential, whilst at the same time allowing any learning difficulties to be identified and resolved. As a result, the children are keen to work hard in an environment where expectations and boundaries are clear and well understood. Many independent schools use the National Curriculum as a guide but are acutely aware that education extends far beyond the contents of that document and subsequently offer a rich and varied curriculum.

We are fortunate enough to live in an area with some of the finest independent schools on our doorstep. As a parent, it is necessary to consider your own child's needs and requirements and it is therefore essential to take advantage of Open Days to see first hand what each school has to offer. Take time to speak with the Head Teacher and members of staff to gain their vision for the school and the suitability for your child. With such flexibility within the independent sector, it is important to thoroughly research the schools of your choice and make your decision based upon what you have seen. Your decision now helps create the child of the future.
